Day 12 – Back Seat
Yes, I purposefully chose to follow the “Front Row” day with a “Back Seat” day. In a sense we occupy both positions.  You and I are on the front row because we have been baptized, adopted as sons, and welcomed into the Kingdom through the life, death and resurrection of the Messiah, Jesus.  Our celebration of His birth is a celebration of the great reversal. We who are poor, miserable sinners are forgiven, reconciled and welcomed to the center of the action.  All the riches of God’s love are for you and me.
At the same time, we live with a “back seat” attitude of humility.  As Jesus, Son of God, became a helpless infant to rescue humanity, so we imitate our Lord by humbling ourselves before Him and others.   We are on the front row at the manger, but we are servants on our knees in humble awe.
This tension of front row and back seat, son and servant, is always operative for you and me.  It was how Jesus lived for us.  King of Kings, yet helpless baby.  Ruler of the world, yet servant of all.

“…the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”  Mark 10:45
